“And in the same way the Spirit does help in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray, but the Spirit Himself pleads our case for us with groanings unutterable.” Romans 8:26
Sometimes we just do not know how to pray. We feel a loss of words and are enveloped by something greater than ourselves for which human reasoning has no true answer. Leaning into this space may reveal a vulnerability and humility in which we cannot possibly pretend that we know what to even pray for. We can allow the Spirit to reveal this for us if we make room. It is here that we confess to the Father, “I do not know anything except that I am not in control.” The perceived sense of control that we often exhibit makes us gods in our own eyes. We often forget the words of James teaching us about how to view our lives. Truly, the only thing we can control are our thoughts and reactions to our circumstances. No one can strip of us of our will to praise and pray through any circumstance, even if we don’t even know what to say.
