In the last couple of days, the word “know” has come up in study and prayer. This has been a big word in my quest to understand how to best homeschool my children, as I have been led to seek “knowing” my children and placing a high emphasis on this. There is so much I need to learn about them, but more than just knowledge this kind of knowing is about a deeper understanding which I deeply desire.
In Jeremiah, Yah says He knows him, even before he was born.
“Before I formed you in the belly I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I did set you apart – I appointed you a prophet to nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5, TS2009
This is the Hebrew word, yada. There is so much depth to this word; from simply understanding to the concept of being known, and even known in an intimate sense. It’s pretty overwhelming to serve an Elohim who KNOWS us. In studying this word in the ancient Hebrew, a picture of it becomes more clear in our minds regarding what the Father means by it. It is made up of three letters. Yud, Dalet, and Ayin. The Yud is a picture of a hand and can represent the work that one does. The Dalet is a picture of the door of a tent that swings back and forth. The Ayin is a picture of an eye, which can represent knowledge. In essence, the way Yahuah KNOWS us is one in which He is willing to take action to enter into our lives and truly see us. What a picture of our Messiah Yahusha! He is an active Elohim. There is nothing passive about His love.
Oswald Chambers says it like this
Isn’t it piercing to realize that [Elohim] not only knows where we live, but also knows the gutters into which we crawl! He will hunt us down as fast as a flash of lightning. No human being knows human beings as [Elohim] does.
But this is a reciprocal relationship. We are also told to KNOW Him.
Trust in יהוה with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
Proverbs 3:5-6, TS2009
Know Him in all your ways, And He makes all your paths straight.
As we develop this relationship of being intimate with our Father, my prayer is that as parents, we will model this kind of willingness to know deeper within our families. That in the everyday, seemingly not so important moments, we will always have in mind that people just want to be known. Our children, even when they don’t express it, also want to be known by us and then accepted just where they are, even as change work is being done. This is what our Father does for us. He meets us where we are, encourages us to continue, and walks with us along the Way.
Sameḵ The secret of יהוה is with those who fear Him, And He makes His covenant known to them.
Psalm 25:14, TS2009
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know, as I also have been known.
1 Corinthians 13:12, TS2009
