Why We Homeschool …

“And you shall lay up these Words of Mine in your heart and in your being, and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up, and shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children are increased on the soil of which ‎יהוה swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens on the earth”

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

As a family of disciples of Yahusha, our philosophy of education is based on Scriptural principles (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Scripture, being the True Word of Yahuah, is the final authority in all areas of life and education (Proverbs 30:5). The impact this has on our homeschool is that Scripture studies are a natural part of our daily lives. In addition, the study of any subject is approached from an understanding that Truth is absolute and revealed by Ruach Ha’Chodesh through the living Word of Scripture.

To be considered well-educated and thus suitable for service to Yahuah and others, a student must learn to deal with any situation or idea presented. The student must be prepared to assess each idea or problem according to Scriptural standards to determine a proper response or course of action. The student must then possess the courage and wisdom to act upon convictions. Without this strength of character, a person may never be considered truly educated.

Yahuah has given parents the responsibility of raising children. We are held accountable to ‎Yahuah for the education of our children (Titus 1:9). No one else will be held accountable for the raising of our children besides us. Not only is training and teaching our children our responsibility, but also our honor and privilege. After the exodus, the first generation that failed and died in the wilderness had children who would one day inherit the promised land. Yahusha, son of Nun, was an upright man but under his leadership, the children of the first generation forgot to study the ways of Yah. When he died, they quickly turned to whoring after idols. May Yahuah give us the understanding of what it truly means to educate our children in The Way! Education goes beyond English, Math, and History, and encompasses the teaching of character. Through what feels mundane at times, our children have an opportunity to learn to persevere and develop qualities they otherwise would not. Through the teaching of Scripture which they would never get in any traditional school, they learn the Way of Yah, and prayerfully begin to make it real in their lives. We GET to do this. We GET to instruct our children in the True Way, and that is a responsibility and a privilege. Through daily instruction and celebration of the feasts of Yah, our children are taught to always remember His Way, to honor and respect His Word, and to learn to obey and thereby show they love Him (John 14:15, 15:14, 1John 5:3).

May we never forget that our children are His first. We have been given them as a gift to raise them up for Him, so that when they are mentally capable they will choose Him. They will be able to look at the world around them and have the capacity to see Truth and articulate it well, to themselves and to others.

So, why do we homeschool? First and foremost because we believe this is the calling for all parents by the Father. Is it difficult sometimes? Absolutely. But, what great thing comes easily? We have counted the cost, and have found our children worth it and we want to dedicate our time to make sure to teach them the Way as we pray they will choose to continue to walk in It.

Personally, as a mom, I do have another reason. Losing my youngest daughter after only 4 short months in my womb has given me a fresh way to view my other children. Only death can make us dig deeper into life. Everyday is a gift the Father has given us to guide our children, and we don’t want it wasted. Our desire is that we will all be with Yahusha and the Father together one day, all six of us. And so I delight in it all, even in the hard times, because I know that only my husband and I will be able to teach our children with eternity in mind.
